Question:
There is a very loud, strong compressor next to the IVF lab I am building. the walls vibrate and a drum like sound is clearly present. Besides issues with performing ICSI, are there data on levels of sound and vibration that would be detrimental to embryo quality and pregnancy rates.

Sound and vibration energies on in vitro embryo development
Michael L. Reed said on 10 November 2009

"An interesting question - there was some work years back - circa 1970's or so - related to the aerospace industry, on vibration and sound effects on in utero embryo development in mice (an maybe chick embryos) and I believe that there were some negative effects, though I can't say if the effects were fear induced, stress induced, or actual embryonic changes. There have been a number of similar studies with regard to gravity.

To your question, I have one abstract from the 2005 ESHRE meeting:

Effect of acoustic vibrations on mouse embryo development. O. Lopez-Rodrigo et al 2005 P-464 pg i167.

The conclusion states "Mouse embryos exposed to acoustic vibrations of moderate intensity within the range of audible frequencies do not show morphologic alterations, but their developmental rate appears to be faster than controls."

They evaluated two frequencies, but I'm not sure what the perceived physical effects would be - are these frequencies - 255.9 and 3465.5 HZ capable of being felt, e.g. physical vibration of the embryos as well, or is this just energy?

Perhaps this group from Spain will contribute more on their work.

Mike"
