Question:
The main use of heparin is to avoid the blood clot during the oocyte retrieval procedure. Does anyone use flushing medium without heparin in their procedure? Any effect on fertilization rate in IVF?

"Wendy, we did use heparin in the past (6yrs ago) as you mentioned and feared for cloting while aspiration. Now I do not use heparin in flush medium and I did not find any difference in finding any clots or in collecting eggs or fertilisation rate or pregnancy rate. I think it is safe to stop using in your fulushing medium."

"presence of heparin only delays the clot formation for a small time, if you are screening the follicular aspirate at the same time then, probably you dont need it."

"I don't know whether any contaminated heparin in UK. But I just wonder if there is no heparin in the flushing medium, blood clot occurs and end-up is the clot blood attached in the oocyte and affect the fertilization in IVF and also increase the difficulty of oocyte finding. I ask, cos' heparin is stopped to use in our centre cos' of complicated supplier procedure. I am only a small potato and I don't know it does adverse effect or not, so I post this question and ask any expertist opinions. Thanks."

"Any UK clinician responding to this question should first read the recent HFEA alert about heparin. This was issued following alerts issued by the MHRA.
Please note, UK clinics must login to the HFEA site to view this alert. www.hfea.gov.uk
The MHRA alerts can be viewed here: http://www.mhra.gov.uk/Publications/Safetywarnings/Drugalerts/CON014890"
