| Question: |

What are the reasons for high prolactin in women? As a infertility specialist, Iam extremely surprised that many of my patients who come to me with infertility issues have high prolactin and mostly accompanied by hypothyroidism. Is it a feature of hot climate or lifestyle patterns in the Middle Easern countries. I have noticed this irrespective of age or race. How can high prolactin be treated other than through medications? |

i totally agree with Dr David Robertson
prolactin may increase because of procedural stress, slight increase seems to have no significance, however prolactin secreting tumors must me ruled out if there is some suspicion.

First of all, define what you mean by a high prolactin level. One thing I notice particularly since I came to work in the Gulf, is the number of women being treated for "hyperprolactinaemia" who don't need to be. A marginal elevation can often be discounted - less than 1000 U/L or 23ng/ml can usually be ignored.Certain drugs may elevate prolactin, as will anxiety (someone coming towards you with a needle and syringe!)and, of course, hypothyroidism / raised TSH.You also need to ask your lab what proportion is macroprolactin and biologically active.
You will then find that a true elevation is not that common.

Hypothyroidism means high TSH.High prolactin levels are common with high TSH.But the prolactin levels are marginally high. Treat by thyroxin eg.100mic gm/day for atleast 15 days and correct the TSH level ( here 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/ml ).Then do prolactin ,it might get corrected.Bye
