On December 2-3 2005, the world?s top fertility experts from Europe, Australia and the USA will meet in Athens for the conference organized by Serono Symposia International Foundation (SSIF) on ?International variation in Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) practice and data collection?.

The conference will be chaired by Prof. J. N. Bontis (1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and will see the participation of international acknowledged academics in ART such as Prof. M. Mastrominas (Embryogenesis ART Center, Athens), Prof. B. Tarlatzis (1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Prof. J. Jenkins (Center for Reproductive Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, St. Michael?s Hospital, Bristol, UK), and Prof. I. Cooke (University of Sheffield, UK).

The aim of the symposium is to compare and discuss the different ways in which ART is managed across the world, and how innovative ways of collecting data on the different methods could be used to improve education in this growing medical field and subsequently improve clinical management. The specialists, all leaders in their medical field, will compare international practice in ART considering how to monitor, establish and share best practice. The symposium will begin by summarizing the international variation in provision of IVF and data collection, followed by lectures on international differences in IVF labs, Quality Management, terminology and the changes that may follow the Human Tissue Directive. The symposium's final theme will consider international differences in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation with particular attention on ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and poor ovarian response.

Reflecting SSIF?s cutting edge approach to Continuing Medical Education, the conference will be combined with an online e-learning program, in order to consolidate learning following the congress, utilizing the pioneering experience of ReproMed. This course will include: multimedia lectures from the congress, interactive questions and discussion fora to meet the experts online. Over 460 respondents from 37 countries demonstrating considerable variation in opinion and practice have completed online questionnaires prior to the symposium. The program of the conference has been submitted for accreditation to the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) and to the Italian Ministry of Health.
