News: Lords propose inclusion of donor-conception information on birth certificates
An amendment to the UK's Human Tissue and Embryology Bill has been tabled in the House of Lords that will require birth certificates to indicate whether a child has been born from donor-conception.

News: New UK strategy to reduce multiple births
The UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) called last week for a new national strategy designed to reduce the number of multiple births from fertility treatments, as a result of which it expects to see the multiple birth rate to fall to 10 per cent. The call followed a public consultation launched in April this year to find the most effective way of preventing multiple births, while still giving women the maximum chance of IVF success.

News: Oosight Imaging System enables a breakthrough: the viable transfer of genetic material for Stem Cell Nuclear Reprogramming in Primates
Cambridge Research & Instrumentation (CRi) announced today that their Oosight™ Imaging System has been used by Dr Shoukhrat Mitalipov to successfully transfer nuclear genetic material from somatic cells from a 10-year-old male macaque to enucleated eggs to generate cloned macaque embryos.

News: New Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill published in UK
A new Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill was published last week by the UK's Department of Health. The Bill is designed to update and reform the existing laws on assisted conception and human embryo research in the UK, established by the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, although it will not alter the existing model of regulation and will remain based on the basic foundations of the law as it currently stands.

News: First IVM babies born in the UK
The first babies in the UK to be conceived using in vitro maturation (IVM) techniques have been born. The Oxford Fertility Unit - the first clinic in the country to be given a licence to perform the procedure - announced the birth of the twin babies earlier this month.

News: Acupuncture may reduce the success of IVF
Contrary to the widely held belief that acupuncture enhances a woman's chances of successfully becoming pregnant whilst undergoing IVF treatment, a study at the University of Oklahoma found that women who combine acupuncture and IVF were 37 per cent less likely to conceive than those who underwent IVF treatment alone.
