Question:
In our Lab we had a couple, the lady aged 33 years and undergoing her second ICSI cycle. Her first attempt was unsuccessful and in her second trial, out of the 7 oocytes collected, 4 were with brownish yellowish zona and the cytoplasm was pale yellow. The zona looked as though it was dark brownish yellow and she had 13 days of stimulation. In her previous attempt also she have had 13 days of stimulation. the cytoplasm looks normal and she developed good quality embryos from both her good oocytes and dark brownish yellow oocytes after ICSI. however, we avoided transferring the embryos from the dark oocytes. has anybody had similar experiences? what could be the cause of the dark oocytes( age, stimulation days and other parameters seems okay?)? and do we need to avoid transferring these embryos? can we freeze them and use in subsequent cycles? will assisted Hatching help in any way? thanks in advance. Shabana

"I had this patient who was Poor responder. She was 38. Produced 2 very dark brownish oocytes. After ICSI, both fertilized, and trasnferred. She got pregnant, and healthy baby girl has joined the family finally.
Quality of oocytes have to do with many facotrs like pathology, OHS protocol and the drug. I think you have plenty of work on this with the team at your clinic.
All the best"

"Please check the patient's pathology whether she has Endometriosis or untreated PCOS. There is always asynchrony in the oocyte growth and the cohort shall carry similar quality, i.e the embryo quality suffers and implantation failure shall be there if there are oocytes of different quality. Of course along with her age, check her basal FSH , LH, Testosterone, insulin, may be you may catch the culprit hormone. Best of luck"
