Simon Basten, Serono Symposia International
08 July 2005
Serono Symposia International (http://www.seronosymposia.org), a non-profit organization, is dedicated to the development of healthcare professionals through the provision of ethical, well balanced and cutting edge medical education that aims to improve clinical outcomes. We are an accredited CME provider by the ACCME, the American Nurses Association's ANCC and the ACPE. We also have had our congresses accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) as well as country/regional CME accreditating bodies.
The following are the list of congresses that we are organizing in the field of reproductive health for the autumn.
How to improve ART outcome by gamete selection, October 7-8, 2005, Gubbio, Italy
The aim of the symposium is to bring together the competences of clinicians and scientists in order to identify early prognosis regarding the developmental fate of a single gamete. The selection of the ?best? oocyte and spermatozoa for in vitro fertilization plays a crucial role especially where for religious, ethical or legal reasons the creation of supernumerary embryos has to be avoided. This is particularly true in Italy where the law impose a limitation on the number of oocytes to be used per cycle. Different ovarian stimulation protocols and drugs will be proposed and analyzed in order to improve the oocytes quality. In contrast to IVF, in ICSI the surrounding cumulus and corona cells must be removed completely, as only denuded oocytes can be successfully micromanipulated. This ancillary effect of ICSI allows focus on the morphology of the oocyte before fertilization. Furthermore, the recent development of a computer-assisted polarization microscopy system (Polscope) with which the microtubules can be visualized in living oocytes on the basis of their birefringence permits in vivo analysis of the meiotic spindles of denuded oocytes subjected to ICSI. In addition, applying intracytoplasmic sperm injection, the selection of the spermatozoon for injection is performed directly by the biologist. Therefore, there is a need for prognostic parameters to estimate the quality of the single spermatozoa. The Conference will explore the main reasons for oocyte and sperm impairment, and define the possible predictive factors for successful gamete selection prior to fertilization.

ART in the 21st Century: A Time for Reflection and New Horizons - Part 1, November 11-12, 2005, Nice, France
As we move ahead in the 21st Century and the first child conceived through IVF has turned 25, it is time not only to reflect on the development of the field of human ART but also to look forward to the next generation of technologies that will impact patient treatment in the years to come. Certainly there is a global movement to reducing the number of embryos transferred, in some countries reducing this to a single embryo, while there is also a growing voice regarding the safety of ART procedures. The aim of this symposium is to address the question of how can we, as a medical and scientific community, move to reducing the number of embryos transferred, ultimately to a singleton, while also addressing concerns regarding the potential problems to parents and children associated with IVF.

International variation in Assisted Reproduction Technology practice and data collection December 2-3, 2005, Athens, Greece
The aim of the symposium is to compare international practice in ART considering how to monitor, establish and share best practice. It will reflect on international differences in clinical practice focusing particularly on Europe, USA, and Australia considering the challenge and benefits of international infertility data collation. The value of infertility data to predict the need and choice of treatment with minimum morbidity will be presented as the foundation for clinical decision-making. Reflecting Serono Symposia International?s cutting edge approach to continuing professional development the symposium will provide a limited number of participants the opportunity to take advantage of state of the art developments in online education pioneered by ReproMED.

Endometrium and embryo implantation, December 16-17, 2005, Paris, France
A multitude of recent studies and symposia identifying important molecular and cellular mediators of the implantation process may have direct applications in clinical reproductive technologies. This symposium on the endometrium and embryo implantation, will review the most recent advances in endometrium and embryo implantation, the complex process of implantation, and clinical conditions that optimize the embryo implantation.
