News: Stress doesn't affect IVF success, study finds

Lucy Freem 01 March 2011

Stress levels are unlikely to affect whether or not a woman becomes pregnant following fertility treatment despite anecdotal reports, a review suggests.

Researchers from Cardiff University and the University of Thessaloniki in Greece reviewed 14 previous studies that investigated pre-treatment stress in over 3,500 infertile women undergoing a single cycle of IVF. The authors then compared data on emotional distress levels for women who became pregnant and those who did not. The review, published in the British Medical Journal, found no association between levels of emotional distress and the success of fertility treatment.

The studies reviewed used various ways of measuring anxiety or depression and included women undergoing several kinds of fertility treatments. Women were assessed before treatment for anxiety or depression and then the success or failure of their treatment was recorded.

Lead researcher Professor Jacky Boivin, from the Fertility Studies Research Group of Cardiff University, said the meta-analysis should 'reassure women that emotional distress caused by fertility problems or other life events co-occurring with treatment will not compromise their chance of becoming pregnant'.

Clare Lewis-Jones, chief executive of the charity Infertility Network UK, said: 'Whilst stress may not impact on the success of treatment, the need for patients to receive support and understanding should not be ignored'.

Around one third of UK couples end assisted

News: Couple try for 'saviour sibling' to help son with Diamond Blackfan anaemia

Sujatha Jayakody 08 March 2011

The parents of a seriously ill child plan to have a 'saviour sibling' whose umbilical cord cells could be used to treat the child's life threatening condition.

Two year old William Rhodes has an extremely rare condition called Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) which means that his bone marrow is unable to produce red blood cells. As well as needing a blood transfusion every five weeks, he urgently requires a bone marrow transplant without which he would suffer serious health complications.

Ben and Caroline Rhodes hope that by using PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) prior toIVF they can have a child who will be free from the condition and who could also act as a bone marrow donor to William. Using PDG to first select embryos which could be a tissue match for William, stem cells derived from the umbilical cord would then be used in the bone marrow transplant.

Mrs Rhodes said: 'We had always planned to have another child and this way we can help William at the same time. Hopefully it will save his life and give him a better quality of life'. It is reported that transplants from siblings are reported to increase the success rates by 50 percent when compared with an unrelated donor.

DBA is extremely rare, affecting only 1 in 125 people in the UK. The exact cause of the condition is not known, but it is thought to occur during early stages of red blood cell production. In up to 25 percent of cases it is known that the defect is due to faults in a gene called the small Ribosomal Protein 19 (RPS19). Researchers are currently searching for other genes that could be to blame for the remaining percentage of unknown causes.

News: Surrogate mother who kept baby wins claim for support

Ayesha Ahmad 19 April 2011

A couple must pay more than £500 monthly maintenance to a surrogatemother who decided to keep the baby. Baby T was born in July last year but the birth mother, an unmarried woman known as Miss N, who was acting as a surrogate for a couple known as Mr and Mrs W, refused to hand over the baby as agreed.

Mr and Mrs W entered into an informal agreement with Miss N after meeting her through a surrogacy website under which it was said they agreed to pay Miss N £10,000 in expenses. However, during the pregnancy, Miss N decided to keep the baby and refused to continue with the agreement.

Miss N was inseminated with Mr W's sperm and both Miss N and Mr W are considered to be the child's legal parents. Mr and Mrs W lost a custody battle after the birth of Baby T and relinquished their contact rights, arguing it would be unfair for the child to be split between two homes and such a relationship would be too emotionally distressing. Miss N was also allowed to keep £4,500 already paid to her by the couple.

The latest decision from the Child Support Agency, which the couple have said they plan to appeal, means that as the child's biological father, Mr W must pay £568 in child support every month. Commenting on the decision, Mr W said: 'If I need to pay £500 a month because otherwise the child will be living in poverty then that is another reason why the baby should be with us'.

Although surrogacy in the UK is lawful, surrogacy agreements, even those formalised in writing, are not enforceable in the courts. The legal mother of a child born to a surrogate is always the birth mother. This means that the commissioning parents of a surrogacy arrangement must apply for a parental order from the family courts to amend the birth certificate and be recognised as legal parents.

Mr W is now calling for a review of the laws on surrogacy, adding: 'I think this was about an income. I've written to my MP for a change in the law and we'll appeal'.
